CHAPTER 5

As soon as they walked into the main room, David’s eyes began to water and shortly after that he felt rather light-headed. He waved to Frank that they should leave. Once outside, he pulled in several deep breaths of air.

“See what I mean?” Frank asked.

“Ya. Any idea what’s causing it?”

“None.” Frank fiddled with his glasses—behind them his blue eyes looked worried. “It’s not a natural by-product of the distilling. I’d only just turned the machine on. Plus it’s never happened before.”

“Did you have a chance to look around?”

“No. By the time I recognized that something was wrong, the fumes were so strong that I had to leave.”

At that moment Jimmy Cotton turned a corner round the pond and headed toward them on his riding lawn mower. Jimmy was an Englisch teenager who mowed the areas bordering the dirt path, as well as the walking areas around the pond and through the cultivated fields. He mainly worked after school and on Saturday.

David held up his hand, and Jimmy stopped.

The boy was all arms and legs with a good deal of acne thrown in. David didn’t envy him that time of life, though he could have told him it wouldn’t last. He had good years ahead of him.

Jimmy shut down the motor and pulled out the earbuds that he always wore. Perhaps it helped to shut out the noise of the mower, though the raucous music David heard coming through the small device sounded worse than a mower to him.

“Hi, Jimmy. Could I borrow your—” He put his hand over his nose and mouth to indicate that he wanted the mask Jimmy was wearing.

“This? We’re not supposed to use each other’s.”

“Ya, that makes sense, but there’s a problem in the mint distillery. I need to cover my mouth and nose . . .” Jimmy wasn’t listening. He’d hopped off the mower, pulled up the seat, and was digging through the items in the storage compartment. Finally he pulled out a package of face masks and handed a clean one to David.

“Danki.”

“No problem.” Without another word, Jimmy replaced his earbuds, started the mower, and drove away.

“Want me to go in?” Frank asked.

For a moment, David almost said yes. But then he remembered Frank was closing in on his eightieth birthday. While he might know what to look for, the dangers seemed too great.

“I’ll just take a look around and then come back and describe it to you.”

“Should we call the police or Bobo?”

“Not yet.”

McPherson had been quite adamant that he did not want the police involved if it could be helped. Obviously if someone was hurt, they would need to file a report. Otherwise, he wanted David to handle things on his own and report back to him.

“Let me take a look first.”

David placed the mask firmly over his mouth and nose and then walked into the distillery. He really had no idea what he was looking for. His eyes once again began to water, but he didn’t feel light-headed as he had before.
